{"id":54953,"date":"2020-05-13T11:42:32","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T09:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/catalogo.tejidosignifugos.com\/fabrics-suitable-for-the-conservation-of-artworks-oddy-test\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T19:30:56","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T17:30:56","slug":"fabrics-suitable-for-the-conservation-of-artworks-oddy-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catalogo.tejidosignifugos.com\/en\/fabrics-suitable-for-the-conservation-of-artworks-oddy-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Fabrics suitable for the conservation of artworks &#8211; Oddy Test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Museums and exhibition halls use textiles to preserve their artworks or as a support to present the various valuable objects they wish to display to the public.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure the proper conservation of these precious objects, care must be taken to ensure that the fabrics on which they are placed do not react with the materials they are composed of.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Oddy test<\/strong> is a procedure created at the British Museum in London by conservation scientist William Andrew Oddy in 1973, and later improved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, to test materials in and around artworks.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>ORDU\u00d1A 1755 SL<\/strong>, we have developed two fabrics that have passed the Oddy test: a standard 100% cotton fabric (<strong>Ducal Pique 290 g\/m2 natural white<\/strong>) and a fire-retardant 100% polyester fabric (<strong>Duero Canvas 200 g\/m2 natural white<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This test is performed because, although fabrics may be safe for the purposes for which they are manufactured, they can emit small amounts of chemicals in the form of gases, which can damage the valuable objects they come into contact with over time. Therefore, to guarantee their perfect conservation, it is mandatory to test and evaluate these fabrics. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The principle on which the <strong>Oddy test<\/strong> is based is the corrosion of metals in the presence of high temperature and relative humidity, and oxidizing gases from the materials being tested.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test consists of placing the material to be tested and three samples in the form of metal coupons (copper, silver, and lead) in a hermetically sealed container for 28 days at 100% relative humidity and a temperature of 60\u00b0C. After this period, the metals are analyzed and conclusions are drawn based on the corrosion elements that have appeared. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test is carried out with the three metals mentioned above (silver, chromium, and lead), but any other metal that is also sensitive to contamination, such as aluminum or zinc, can be added to the test.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Museums and exhibition halls use textiles to preserve their artworks or as a support to present the various valuable objects they wish to display to the public.
